How it works

A common rule of thumb from the AKC: a puppy can hold it for about one hour per month of age. The planner uses gaps of 2 hours at 2–3 months, 3 hours at 3–6 months and 4 hours after that.

Trips also come right after waking, about 15 minutes after each meal and just before bed. Add one after naps and play.

Young puppies may need a trip at night too. Your vet or trainer can say what fits your puppy.

Questions

How long can a puppy hold its bladder?

A common rule of thumb is about one hour per month of age, so around 2 hours at 2 months and 3 at 3 months. It is a rough guide, not a limit to test.

Does a puppy need to go out at night?

Young puppies often need one trip during the night at first. Ask your vet or trainer what fits your puppy.

How does PupShift help with potty training?

Everyone at home marks Outside or Accident in one tap and sees two weeks of progress. With “time to go out again” on, phones at home ring 1 to 4 hours after the last mark (phone app, alerts on).

Put it where the whole family sees it. A schedule on paper works until someone forgets to tick it. On a shared board, everyone sees what’s done.
